For Tuesdays with Toyota, we are spotlighting some of USATF's most dedicated members with a short feature on USATF.org and our social media channels. Here is our feature with USATF athlete Jamie Allen, a member of the USATF Oregon Association from Junction City, Oregon. Why are you a member of USATF? I joined USATF to become a certified official. I was a distance runner in high school ('66-'70) and college ('71-'72). I continued running during my twenty-seven years of service in the US Army. After retirement, I volunteered as a cross country and track and field coach at my local high school. I am now starting the final phase of the athlete-coach-official plan. What is your "why"? I love track and field. It has given me so much during my life. I am motivated to sharing that love, as well as the lessons I've learned along the way, with the younger athletes I have contact with. What is something that helps you focus while you train? "Embrace the suck. Ruck up. Drive on." A phrase used in great quantity by my instructors during the US Army Special Forces Qualification Course. How has USATF impacted you? I have found a new and highly rewarding way to give back all that the sport has given me during my lifetime. Outside USATF how do you spend your time? I am a volunteer for the cross country and track and field programs at my local high school. I enjoy reading, watching movies and doing household projects. I am an active member of the Special Forces Association, as well as the Vietnam Helicopter Pilots Association. I continue to stay physically fit, though I haven't been able to run due to injuries incurred from my military service. My wife and I enjoy traveling to visit family and friends. What is your favorite USATF memory? Interacting with the Team USA coaches and athletes, as well as the USATF officials at the 2022 World Athletics Championships. I was privileged to work in the team tent area adjacent to Hayward Field. Is there an athlete or person who inspired you to join the sport? My middle school PE teacher.
